Hiking route to: Cahorros del Río Chíllar

The Chíllar River has become one of the most appreciated attractions by tourists and residents of the town of Nerja . This hiking trail has become for many the ideal plan to enjoy nature.

The route of this river crosses the towns of Nerja, Frigiliana and Cómpeta (located in the eastern part of the province of Malaga).

The route that runs along the Chíllar River is especially recommended during the summer season . Although in order to avoid crowds it is also advisable to go during the months of March, April, May and October (low season). However, the Chíllar River belongs to the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park , so it is open all year round.

We are facing a linear route of medium difficulty. The length of the route is about 7 kilometers in an estimated time of 3 hours.

Los Cahorros del Río Chíllar receive numerous visitors during the months of June, July and August. If you prefer to enjoy this wonderful water trail without crowds, we recommend starting the route early. It is also preferable to take the route during the week.

The directions to follow to get to the starting point of the route are as follows: From Avenida de Pescia we head towards the Urbanization Almijara and Barriada Los Poetas. We continue through Julio Romero, Avenida de la Constitución, Cisne and Mirto streets. At this point we will find a large esplanade enabled as a free parking area. From this last street (called Mirto) we will see a lane that will take us to an abandoned quarry next to the channel of the Chíllar River. We will also see a supply facilities and a barrier. Therefore, access to the river is easily recognizable. From here we will start the route on foot .

The traditional route consists of following the riverbed on foot, discovering the rock formations, the natural pools and the native flora of the place. As for the rock formations present in the riverbed, we can say that they are called Dolomite Rock.

You will also see old hydroelectric factories that follow the course of the river. The best known factory is the so-called Third Factory or Salto Grande. At this point we will find ourselves in the second half of the route.

The common destination of most hikers coincides with El Vado de los Patos . An impressive natural pool bathed by an incessant waterfall of very refreshing water. After the Vado de los Patos it is possible to follow the route. However, the level of difficulty increases considerably. You must have knowledge of climbing and, in addition, dexterity. It is the only way to get to La Presa . From here you can also take another route to the Cortijo del Imán .

It should be noted that the most spectacular point of the route coincides with the presence of the famous Cahorros. The charm of this water hiking trail is that you can watch the water follow its course between huge mountain crevices. The distance between the walls of the cracks is just over a meter wide. Therefore, you will not have any problem when it comes to exceeding them.
