Throughout the industrialization of Nerja, sugars have been the protagonists. However, there are data from other industries that grew around the town. For example, the paper industry and the manufacture of cane honey.
1. Paper Mill
The Molino de Papel factory was dedicated to the manufacture of quality brown paper and white paper. Specifically for notaries (old objects used for writing since the 15th century). Its industrial activity began in the 18th century. In 1890 the production of paper ceased. Currently the industrial complex is made up of two rectangular-shaped buildings.
The factory complex is located at the eastern end of the town of Nerja . More specifically in Maro . Next to the mouth of the Río de la Miel and the Paper Mill P laya. At the height of the national road N-340.
We are facing one of the few paper factories that are still preserved in Andalusia. Currently the facilities are inhabited.
2. Cane Honey Factory
The remains of the old Nerja cane honey factory are located on a plot on the left end of the Chíllar River.
Originally this area of 3,500 square meters was destined for the installation of a flour mill at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1940 it was remodeled to install a honey mill. Specifically, the RIFOL brand cane honey was manufactured.
The buildings that made up the honey factory are abandoned and in a state of ruin. In addition, contemporary buildings have been added to the complex. Despite this, the name of the old factory can still be seen on the façade.
Despite not being a traditional sugar factory, this complex also used sugar cane as its raw material. The factory was only responsible for the manufacture of cane honey. Unlike the rest of the mills that developed their industrial activity in Nerja.
It is in the neighboring town, Frigiliana , where the only cane honey factory that is still in operation is located. Thanks to this we can continue to enjoy this delicacy.
