Nerja Fair

Nerja Fair

The Nerja Fair takes place around October 8. This local celebration lasts for four days. Therefore, its completion usually coincides with the national holiday of Pilar Day (October 12).

The location of the fair is totally central . Located in an area near Calle Hernando Carabeo (one of the most characteristic black pedestrian streets). Specifically in the Carabeo Parking. Less than a kilometer from both the Balcony of Europe and the Nerja Bus Station.

The celebration of the Nerja Fair is held in honor of the local patrons: San Miguel Arcángel and the Virgen de Las Angustias. The tradition continues its course year after year. At the end of September there is a procession in which the Virgen de Las Angustias is transferred from her chapel (Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias) to the Church of El Salvador . During the Nerja fair, the patron saint of Nerja is transferred back to her chapel. On October 10 a special mass is celebrated followed by this procession (also accompanied by the patron saint of Nerja). For many locals this day is considered the most significant day of the fair.

During this patronal festival, singing and dancing are very present. The fairgrounds full of fairground attractions, homemade food stalls and of course, with the presence of traditional booths . The booths offer their visitors food, live music and lots of fun. Nerja receives numerous performances by national singers (flamenco, pop music, classics, etc.). España Square, located a few metres from the Balcony of Europe, also offers a concert marquee. Most of the fair nights a different singer or music group attends to offer the best live music .

It is worth highlighting the celebration of beauty contests in which the King and Queen of the Nerja Festivities are chosen. Two people will be elegies as Miss and Mister Nerja, along with their respective ladies and gentlemen. In three different modalities: infantile, youthful and of the third age. Those chosen in the youth modality will parade in each of the local festivals and will choose to participate in the beauty pageants at the provincial level.

On the third day of the fair there is a parade of floats . As a verbena, the locals choose their best flamenco and flamenco outfits to tour the town. This moment usually reminds us of the Pilgrimage of San Isidro (traditional festival of Nerja).

The Nerja fair is held during the day and at night. The booths and tents are flooded with joy. In this celebration both children and adults enjoy. Nerja offers its visitors and residents the possibility of having fun with music, parties and food for all tastes.

As a curiosity, the Nerja Fair adds its celebration to the celebration of “Children's Day”. On the last day of the Fair, the attractions cut their rates in half. So that we can all enjoy them.

In short, the Nerja Fair is one of the most complete and massive festivities in the town. In fact, this celebration is very popular among other regions of the province of Malaga.
