The Maro Fair of Wonders begins around the 6th of September. The duration of the celebration reaches four days. Generally its celebration coincides with the first weekend of September.
The origins of this celebration date back to the 16th century. The Maro Fair takes place in honor of its patron: La Virgen de las Maravillas. The district of Nerja brings together all the ingredients to create the perfect celebration before the summer comes to an end.
The night of September 6 takes place the eve of the Maro Fair. A musical band inaugurates the beginning of the festivities. Followed by dance performances and the proclamation that officially announces the start of the fair weekend. This first night the ceremony for the Election of the Queen of the Maro Festivities is also held. After that, the lighting of the fair is put into operation.
The second day of the fair is full of joy and fun. Concerts, dance performances, booths and typical products of the area for those who want to enjoy this local celebration. During the third day of the fair, on September 8, mass is celebrated around the Virgen de las Maravillas. Held in the Church of Maro called Church of Our Lady of Wonders . Before sunset, the procession of the Virgin begins through the streets of the district of Nerja.
The last day of the fair is known as "The day of the horse" due to the concentration of horses that takes place in Maro. During this day, numerous prizes are awarded to the best horsemen.
