Sierra de Almijara

Sierra de Almijara

The Sierra de Almijara has been divided into smaller units due to its large dimensions. The most characteristic subdivisions are listed below:

  • The Sierra de Cómpeta : in which we highlight the Raspon de Los Moriscos with 1779 meters of altitude (also known as Cerro Lucero). This is the westernmost section.
  • La Sierra de Enmedio : Following the relief we descend to a section located in Frigiliana.
  • La Sierra de Nerja : we continue east to find this section. The highest peak is Cerro Navachica with 1832 meters of altitude.

In the Sierra de Almijara the existence of steep slopes is very common. Therefore, the presence of Lomas and Tajos is abundant. In addition, there are ridges, depressions and steep ravines.

1 . Hills: From North to East we can name the following hills: Loma de Gaviara and Loma del Daire (near Competa). Then we continue through the Loma de la Mata, Loma del Cerro Verde and Lomas del Pedregal, before reaching the terms of the Sierra de Enmedio ( Frigiliana ). It is in this territory when we find the Loma del Chaparral, which belongs to the Cerro del Cisne . In the domain of Cerro Navachica there are the Loma del Imán, Lomas Llanas, Loma de la Encina, Cuesta del Espartal, Loma Ubares, etc.

2. Tajos: Among the diversity of Tajos we can highlight the following: the Tajo de la Cueva del Daire, Tajo Reventadero (just before reaching the Sierra de Enmedio). From this point we find the Tajo Baena and the impressive Tajo del Almendrón , belonging to the Chíllar River basin. Finally, the Tajo de los Castillejos (bordering the province of Granada). It should be noted that the most notable peaks surround the head of the Chíllar River , mainly the Tajos del Sol (set of practically vertical slopes with slopes of up to a thousand meters).

3. Cahorros and depressions: Due to erosion, other curious formations have also been generated, such as the Cahorros of the Chíllar and Higuerón rivers . Although it has also formed depressions, more popularly known as Hoyas (Hoya de la Cuna, Hoya de Lucas, Hoya de Quinta, Hoya de la Mula, Hoya de Navica, etc.).

4. Ravines: Finally, we must mention the formation of impressive ravines that has taken place in the Sierra de Almijara. The ravines that form the hydrographic network of the most important courses are: the Barranco del Atajo, Barranco Cordero, Barranco del Almirez, Barranco del Agujero ... (all of them belonging to the Higuerón River). On the other hand, the Barranco del Loro, Barranco Llano, Barranco Cerezo, Barranco del Espejo ... (belonging to the Chíllar River), as well as the Barranco de los Cazadores , Barranco de los Colmenarejos, among others. The latter are part of characteristic territories due to their dry bed during most of the year.
